Sunday Independent Band of the Week

Sunday Independent Band of the week

DIE ROBOT is a new band founded by Barbie Saint and Vince Christian, I have never had the pleasure of meeting either in person but have known Barbie for a very long time, she was the first person to welcome me and Empire day to right after had died and killed all the independent artist pages. Barbie was just to cool, and the music their band “The Pop Dolls” had available was just fantastic ( is gone now as well but with places like Facebook, reverb nation sound cloud there are still places for those to get heard, just not the same)

I knew Back then they would do something with their music I think they will only get bigger, they recently in the past few years moved from Florida through the mid west winding up in Portland Oregon ( honestly I don’t know if it was planned or if they let the wind take them, but what ever it was it seems they landed in a place that was good for them they have done so much as I watch from afar.) You could say I am even a little Jealous/But it is their time and I think they will have more to come bigger and better is all I wish for the both of them and the rest of the new Band DIE ROBOT – Humans playing music:

  • Vince Christian: Vocals/Guitar/Songwriter
  • Barbie Saint: Bass/Vocals/Songwriter
  • Mallory Hamilton: Keys/EDrums/Tenor Sax
  • Josh Ketterer: Guitar
  • Angela Johnson: Drums

Recording Collaborators

  • Charles Beasley: Shredding Guitar

*note links in my paragraph will open spotify web player 😉

One of the things that initially drew me to this duos music besides the overtly sexual tone of the song Candy Ways  (and this may not even be what they were shooting for with the song) .. was that I felt such a kind-ship with the music, it was Rock with some pop in it some punk some new wave, and a lot of Goth/Dark-wave/Industrial sounds. It was very close to what my band was doing as well, do I dare say its underground 80’s retro?  — well I hate to label- I hate genres as you will find if you follow my rants, musings and post on this blog or on my Facebook or Twitter feed.

In Spotify  top hits Order (yes I love Spotify, just hope we can find how to pay the artist a little bit more than they do now)

First Track, it is a new retro sound some of DIE ROBOT has almost a glam metal feel like I am back in LA or Phoenix in 1989-92 –> Effigy but it has such a new wave pop sound as well. I really think this may be my favorite song on this First Recording, and I may add  what a great first track  it really gives you a taste of all the sound this band is going to feed you. but there are sexy surprises at each track change.

The second Track is  slower a little Darker, with a really nice GROOVE to sway to, Devour  this song reminds my a bit of a song I heard in Chicago back in the early 90’s by Bodhisattva. I really dig it as I love that SWAY in dark slow music.

not on the EP but DIE ROBOTS first Single –>   Move Along  is very reminiscent of The Pop Dolls more Pop goes Bang Sound, with a darker feeling, this is another favorite it feels to me like we are being told the feelings of the band to move on and keep pushing ahead, to never stop just keep moving on live the dream and it will shine, that’s my take, that if we stop moving we just lay to waste.. Kind of why I always have been a Tumbleweed never staying in one place to long, we are nomads we are hunter gatherers. and our nature is to move along !

*so I dug into the meaning from the CD Baby page –>Move Along is consider the transition song in between Pop Dolls and Die Robot. When Vince Christian and Barbie Saint finally made it to Portland, this is the first song they recorded back in 2012. It has been always performed live by Die Robot and this is the remastered version! -Move Along Recorded & Mixed at Enfected Records. Mastered by Will Coca at Spare Room Mastering.

Track 4 Everything New has a wonderful synth feel but has this wall of distorted guitar driving the rhythm of the song, and Vince has a great tone, it really sounds like this is a “Hey Here We Are we are NEW and so are you, LISTEN to US” kind of song, I may be wrong , and I hear some broken love in there too, but this really seems more like the new beginning to me. think this is my second favorite.. its really got that nice up lifting pop sound with a little darkness in the lyrics.

Track 5  UnHoly One  I fucking LOVE this song !!!  this features Malory  on Sax, and what a sexy sax she blows! the tune has a goth-a-billy feel to it, or a Tito and Tarantula punk vampire goth Texas rock  sound or  a Southwest movie madness a film noir can hear this in any Robert Rodriguez movie, or hell back on Mill ave. Tempe AZ in 1990!    LOVE IT is all I can say

So this is my short and sweet on the EP and an extra single from the band DIE ROBOT.

I really want you to see them check them out, hear them love them, share them and make sure to send them some human love don’t let the ROBOT take over !

Wednesday Rant:Music knows no colors

A blog to read Stumbled upon while looking for something to go with my Music rant of the week, that made me remember.

Detroit Techno: The Electrifying Mojo.

I wanted to share this blog with you as I was looking for some info on Mojo and stumbled upon this Detroit salty street (get it Salty Street – Salty piece of Land /web??) .

You see in the 1980’s when I was a teen in Detroit, The Electrifying Mojo, brought us music that crossed everyone’s “safety” zone. He believed there were no reasons to have black stations and white stations,  or white music black music.  He shared with me every night R&B, Dance and Funk, I may never have heard otherwise and he shared Rock, pop and Punk that my best Friend Brian may never have heard as well (not that friends don’t share music), he did wonderfully bringing those of us together that knew that music was good and funky from all different genres.  Sadly still today the record companies and station owners think different, they believe in that marketing game, and somewhat it may work, but really it just holds us all back as a human race., it keeps us all segregated to a point.  Do you wonder why the recording industry continues to slowly die? maybe because they think they know what type of art/music we should listen to or buy, depending on where we live (Urban/Suburban/Country/Island), or what culture we live in and where our families came from long ago.  I for one think that the recording industry needs to take a look back at Mojo and other genre breaking artist, DJs, Musicians and Thinkers and the world may be a better place.

This really isn’t about race, my rant is to say how stupid it is to say certain music is for one race only, to many people feel tat way, yes we all have different taste, I mean I really do not like Screamo  or death metal but I sure do love  some METAL as well as some smooth SLOW JAM R&B tune. One thing I hope to do with my blog is share a very Diverse taste of music with you, so below please check out this artist you may not know!

I must thank WJLB Detroit, and Mojo for allowing me to grow musically learning to love a little of everything, During the so formative years of a young teen as I try to instill this in my son, and in how I live my life, may the FUNK always be with us, there Ain’t nobody bad like you!

Thursday is Friday Music sharing

Distilled1’s Thursday is Friday Song of the Day

A Detroit institution, a band I didn’t know growing up in Detroit, but one I have more recently become acquainted with in large part because of that devil many in the music industry from labels and bands alike hate – Spotify (and other streaming services) it is a big issue bands not making spit for millions of plays, yeah they deserve to get paid, but how much did they get from terrestrial radio how much did they all get when we made cassette tapes off that radio? I get it I do I am a musician and an artist I would like to get paid properly if my art was streamed 2 million times heck you know a cent or two each time it’s played in full, but at the same time this is really promotion, the industry is much different today there are no payola to spin a new single to sell records because frankly only us audiophiles even buy records and most people don’t buy CDs or other hard goods we may buy a digital copy, but why when it’s at our fingertips 24/7 on smart phones, satellite radio, PC’s, with wi-fi everywhere. Well one thing I can say is I still buy records I love getting a big LP with great artwork, hell I don’t even spin them they are just because, I also buy CDs from independent bands that I have free great MP3’s of given to me and downloaded from the bands and artist, it’s about supporting them it’s about letting them know I like what they are creating. It’s good to me I would have never heard one of the best Bar Bands around without it and mainly most of my music is now found that way. I live in Augusta Georgia and radio here is well very crappy same over and over, and satellite is really not much better its more like a huge CD collection. I digress

So on to The Howling Diablos!

Beachside Getaway Hideaway (via) Tybee Joy Vacations (highly recommended)

Our Extended Weekend Getaway at 19th St. Beach side Hideaway August 22, 2014, started out with a good drive late afternoon on one of the hottest days of the year here in east Central Georgia. It only Got Hotter, but that is ok we were on our way to our relaxation station on Tybee. We arrived later than planned around 6 PM very easy to find if you’re familiar with Tybee, just stay on Butler until it ends on the southern point (Hwy 80/1st St. turns into Butler once you go as far east as you can) your left turn is right before 19th parking /street.

”parking on the grass area right side of drive”

There were guest in the main home, a 1930’s classic southeastern beach home. Who waved and welcomed us from the first floor deck as we quickly unpacked, it was hot and still air never have I been on Tybee with such a calmness not the slightest hint of a breeze! We got the key box on the First attempt opened the door to a wonderful COLD beachy kitchen/living area. Unpacked made a cocktail with the ice that was pre made in the freezer and waiting for us (this is a nice touch). And then off and out to Visit friends at the Campground and Friends out on the strand celebrating birthdays.

Basic Review of 19th St. beach side hideaway :
A wonderful small 1 bedroom, lower level of a classic 1930’s beachfront summer home on Tybee Island. This hideaway is classic vintage beach getaway and the location can’t be beat! You are literally 1 house maybe 50-70 feet off the sand no street to cross just the access right there as the photos suggest. This was perfect for us a couple in our mid years and think it would be great for anyone wanting some privacy right on the beach. The suggestion of a small family, I can see but I am not sure we would want to share with 2 or even one child as it would make for close quarters, but I imagine very doable for a low cost alternative to a hotel room or small condo.
The Beauty of this hideaway to us was the vintage home and the fact that we were pretty hidden form everyone even sitting on the covered deck and people watching as the came pasty and left sun burnt. We really enjoyed the quite of it being so close to the beach and On19th Street parking it was wonderful. The Hideaway is on the southern tip of the island; you can see the “last song” Millers house is across the street if you look hard enough through the trees.

The Unit is well stocked with everything you will need, nothing extravagant, but you’re not coming to cook a gourmet meal here it’s just a beach hideaway something maybe you would see some surfers crashing at. The decor is bright and cheerful and needed being a lower level it is quite dark even at mid-day, but that makes it nice when you need to get out of the hot late summer sun!

For those that do come in late summer August remember that this is Jellyfish season and they will be out, also as we got to see the last days very good chance of high surf and rip tides. With very strong North east winds  hint rent bikes and at low tide work all the way to north shore and ride the wind back to 19th street! What fun you will have.

We spent some time with our good friends at Rivers end campground in the “BEAST” their new RV, sadly the shitter was full the main toilet flush pedal thing broke Oh no how that sucks but they are good sports and seemed to not care the place has really nice air conditioned bathrooms they had 4 right across the road each with a shower as well NICE! We will be seeing about staying here in a cold month in a tent or maybe renting a cabin they have a few and a pool!

Rivers End Campground”
From the BEAST, and Rivers End we headed over to our must stop for Pizza and Socializing at the best Pizza joint in the area (it’s not Chicago it’s not NY it’s a Tybee Gem, Huc A Poos!)

My Review on YELP
We had worked Friday Mary a half day I got off at my normal 2:30PM jealous yet? So with the 3 hour drive and a few cocktails along with some great huge slices of pie we were pretty much done in. We headed back to the south end of the island and out home. We had to stop and visit the Birthday Girl Pattie who started our whole trip! We met up with her and the other lovely ladies at Tybee Island Social Club (CHECK IT OUT) we have never been here always want to go but somehow don’t make it, it is a bit pricey and that may be part of it; other times friends don’t seem too keen on the idea. Well we wound up in love as we went back 2 more times or was it 3? Will have some more on that further along, but we just had a quick drink Mary a Lite beer and I had a $9White Russian

It was fantastic but I think they added nutmeg or something maybe it was the rumchada but it was still good (would rather have extra vodka lol) we headed back to the house I made some popcorn for my bed time snack and we pretty much went straight to sleep.
Day 2:
As usual I can’t sleep on vacation unless I stay up all night out having a good time, so I was up first thing this morning and ready to go out and see that daybreak/sun rise. As usual I took way to many photographs I will add many to the gallery here and as well you can find them on my face book and around the we. Some are exceptional some are mediocre and some stink.

So here we are day 2, I have been up since 4 or 5 AM daybreak wasn’t even until after 6 AM I just don’t want to miss it. Mary did come out with me and that was so nice, as most times I am on my own for the early, early beach walk. We spent some time walking to the pier and up Tybressa street (this is the main “downtown” or commercial strip all little tourist shops and bars and food joints are here along with the strand on the beach.) There of course are many others on Butler and 1st and the Back River but this is that main little Beach area where you can get it all. So we walked up past the closed Docs “Bar” it’s not Docs so I don’t know the door was closed all 4 days , past Wet Willies no breakfast here today they open at 9 am for call a cabs and sex on the beach and whatever hot ales ya. Took a right on Butler.. Do you know where we are headed? – One block north – up Butler the world famous Breakfast club it’s like a CUBS/SOX crosstown game

The Breakfast Club and More Food

And you must try the homemade sausage and red peppers and eggs it’s very Chicago with a Southern touch of soul YUM! This isn’t the place to go every day in my opinion we love it but it’s more a fun experience over best breakfast, it can get pricey but the portions on the specials that tend to cost more are HUGE.
We are stuffed and have 2 large to go containers for later, walked the 4 blocks back to our Hideaway

19th street Beachside Hideaway

Nap Time? Almost! We gathered some things together, and walked over to the beach. Took a bag and book, some paper to sketch and a couple of the supplied beach chairs (we really need to invest in our own nice ones as these are just the best to chill in the sand or surf.) it was maybe 10 and already heating up. Mary sat up close to the wet sand and I went in took the plunge as the surf was trying to push me out and over, every time I leaned over for shells as they washed by. Got a little sting from a Jelly on my foot, but other than that one and the ones the kids were terrorizing on the Beach and then caring around, didn’t see any more. We spent a good couple hours relaxing until the kids started bringing these Jelly fish and setting them in the water near us I was out and ready for a drink.
Got back took a shower a little relaxing in the AC then on the deck. I’m not sure what we did now… should have written sooner… ah that was it relaxing in the AC for me and Mary went to the Beach with our Friends the Birthday Girl and ladies. When she got back we headed out to meet our other Friends at Tybee Times for Drinks and shots and drinks and more Drinks, and we went for Burgers or food well we went to Spanky’s (never have been here and still have not one of these times its sure nice inside!) it was a 30 plus minute wait and they had empty tables … go figure its Tybee time, well who cares we headed up to Bennys and that was empty and maybe too early for this Joint(great Karaoke here late night) so we continued north on butler to Tybee Island Social club again. But this time for dinner, a Review from me – For apps the Ceviche (I ate fish again I tend to like Ceviche) was fantastic and fresh chips and salsa. We guys had burgers, ½ lb. with Boursin cheese spread, Dijon mustard Bacon organic spring greens, and house made pickle freaking amazing! Added Spanish Patatas as well really good Mary had Fish Tacos of course and liked them but I think she still prefers Fannies ask her, and a lobster roll. And the other Lady had  Check out my YELP review.
We form this point were pretty worn out and took a Golf Car Taxi ride back for the night. $3 per person anywhere on the Island (we were close but it was hot) in for the night early, Blame it on the Tybee Time 190 grain Rum Runner slushes and Fire Ball shots and Tequila and jager Bombs.

Day 3 Coffee and some Drinks early AM. Then out for a walk to see about bikes, We rented 2 cruisers from Tims and rode around and found ourselves at Tybee Social club for the Bluegrass Brunch. Read that YELP review, all I can say is I had the best thing I ever ate! We then rode up to 8th street and proceeded to ride the mid tide hard packed beach

It took all of 10 minutes as the wind was out of the North East at about 50 MPH! It was so much fun.

NE Waves

Back at the 19th street beach and sandbar, there were wind surfers galore. And big birds gliding… well hovering.

We rested a bit and went right on back this time we rode to the Sugar Shack, had some huge dripping Ice Cream cones and went from north beach back home to 19th. Again was the best time riding with the wind at our back and the Ocean churning up 7 foot waves and sand blasting all the burnt beach goers. It was now low tide and we had a lot of room was even able to get into the waves some without sinking and slowing.
Some photos from the trip up and down the beach AJ’s some random sunsets   just more I have to many

Sunday Night Dinner at Ajs and well to shorten this really long review   we had a blast ask any Questions we will be glad to answer and feel pretty confident in our knowledge of Tybee and things to do on Tybee

BzzAgent Crest® Sensi-Stop Strip Review and updates

12 days after using Crest® Sensi-Stop Strip that I received Free as a Bzz Agent, I still have no sensitivity to cold or hot foods, I am starting to feel a little where dental work was done but none where I usually jumped out of my skin.
Crest states that they last up to a month and they may but seem to be less effective as the days go on (or maybe I am being a little more daring and brave !)

I will update you in about a week and then again in 2 more

The Summer Bucket List
If you are like me, you tend to feel like you should have done something amazing or been somewhere over the summer. It seems like everyone is doing stuff but us and yes, I know, I know summer is nearly over but for us “empty nesters” we don’t really have to rely on the school calendar anymore so I am going to list 15 things I would like to do before…..hmmm whats a good day. October 1st and I am going to try to write about them too. What do you think of that? 🙂 I may or may not kind of cheat since I already know things that are on our calendar. Hopefully Michael will get to participate in some if it coincides with his work schedule.

X1. Go to a drive in movie  Went to see the Labor Day Retro Triple feature.  So much fun seeing American graffiti, Indiana Jones and of course Rocky Horror picture show.  Throwing toast and yelling out the lines.  So much fun and we even got home at 3 AM.  That hasn’t happened since I couldn’t tell you when.

X2. Go to the beach/ Make a sandcastle  We had an AHmazing time at Tybee.  The first day the weather was super hot but the rest of the weekend it was perfect.

X3.Go to a concert/see a band  We went to see Cheech and Chong and War.  Super cool to see the band from the 70’s and didn’t even realize they sang half the songs they sang.  We also saw some bands at Arts in the Heart.

4.Ride a roller coaster

5. Go Tubing

X6.Ride on a boat, kayak, canoe We Kayaked down the Canal and had an awesome time even though I tipped over and freaked myself out and the end rowing at lake olmstead was a little strenuous.

X7.Take a bike ride  We rented bikes on Tybee and had the best time riding on the beach.  It was like a roller coaster ride.

8.Visit a museum, zoo, botanical garden or planetarium

9. Make Campfire food for dinner with s’mores for dessert which could tie into the next one

10. Camp out in the tent, a cabin or something outdoorsy. (might need to wait until October for this one depending on the weather.)

11. Go bowling

12. Volunteer

13. Go Mini golfing

15.geocaching-faviconGo geocacheing

What do you think? Am I too overzealous? Do you want to join us on our summer bucket list? Post an item from your bucket list in the comments. Anything the Rich’s must do in the next 60 days? Pick one item that you want to do before the summer is over. I challenge you to get out there and make some memories.

looks like we only accomplished 5 out of the 15 but there are still a few days to go in the month of September.  I am looking forward to making our Fall bucket list.  Some of these can definitely carry over.

Music Production

So I have signed up for a free on-line course on music production at the Berklee college of Music
Course at a Glance
6 weeks of study
6-8 hours of work / week
English subtitles

Sounds like it should be fun. I can use DAWs pretty well, but I really have yet to sit down and dig into them or into the art of production. I tend to do what sounds right to my ear and let’s be honest this can be a great thing but can also be bad and keep any music I have produced from being enjoyed by more than a few friends or like eared persons.
So I hope I can take this on and really move up some levels maybe even get me into gear as I have been pretty lame on the music front doing all listening and not much writing or playing of it .. and its one of my loves, I need it it’s like my religion that art and traveling.

So I want to give a plug to them even though I have yet to start
Coursera empowers people to improve their lives, the lives of their families, and the communities they live in with education. Coursera

they offer a lot of other studies and from what I can see they are free! and free is good

In other fronts I have decided to keep my Facebook time to a minimum really waste way to much time on this site waiting for the next funny thing, and I would rather watch TV .. Face book addiction is a lot like a kid not wanting to go to bed as they are afraid they are going to miss that great one time when someone comes and gives free candy and toys and has a party where everything they ever wanted was free for the taking .. yeah that’s what its like isn’t it? we scroll and refresh and look some more waiting like a killer ready to pounce on that next great never to see again post .. Laughing about it is maybe the best medicine.

just some ramblings .. also want to work on some story some writing that ones always hard to get started on .. the Sins of our Fathers
~Rich (Distilled1)

Well I don’t have much to say for the moment as I want to just get this base put up so that I can see if I am getting the Word press stuff figures out correctly this time.

I had started this well over a year ago and well never did anything with it. Maybe its pointless as well since I have a blogger or 3 that I never did anything with after one or two post.. but this being mine I think I should use it for something.. maybe it is what i need to find the more peaceful existence I would like.. maybe I will become a health guru (you can’t possibly believe that can you?)

Maybe I should share this and make a customer mudslide Mary blog page for here tilt stuff , but I offered the site to her she didn’t seem thrilled, but maybe she will start a blog,.. I am looking forward to figuring out how to ad some vlog to this as well I hope I can !

Well for now I am out, and I promise I will work on this and art and music as well as travel more off of Facebook the death of us all is going to be facebook candy crush and the kids and the damn “videA” games (spoken as Hank Hill) speaking of that GTA 5 is really fun and what a time waster!
